Meski rada sulit ditangkap sebagai penggambaran orang cacat akibat perang, Metallica berupaya keras menceritakan bagaimana kehidupan yang bisa dinikmati oleh orang yang kedua kaki dan tangannya diamputasi. Bagaimana bila orang ini juga kehilangan seluruh indra perasanya? Bagaimana, seperti diungkapkan oleh Lars, kalo hidup hanya dengan pikiran saja tanpa bisa berbuat apa-apa?
Kisah nyata petualangan yang luar biasa pendaki gunung Aron Ralston untuk menyelamatkan diri setelah kecelakaan di lembah terpencil dengan panorama menakjubkan dekat Canyonlands Taman Nasional Utah. Lengannya terjepit batu dan ia terperangkap. Selama lima hari berikutnya, Ralston bertahan hidup. Akhirnya dengan pisau lipat seadanya yang ia bawa, dia melepaskan diri dari himpitan batu itu dengan cara memotong sendiri lengannya.
